Zalán Szakács presents Lichtspiel: Catoptric Theatre (Light Scenography)

Wed 29 May | Orgelpark
Specially developed for the opening concert at the Orgelpark, the work Lichtspiel: Catoptric Theatre sits between an installation and a light scenography. Rotterdam-based artist Zalán Szakács started his work from researching the historical medium called the ‘Catoptric Theatre’, which through various reflecting mirrors managed to enlarge, distort and multiply objects, bodies and space into new images. Szakács now applies this principle within the unique architecture of the Orgelpark.
Commissioned by FIBER and the Orgelpark, the site-sensitive work will enhance the concerts of Maria W Horn & Mats Erlandsson and Casimir Geelhoed. It is a further development of his work series ‘Lichtspiel’ (experiment nr. 3), in which he uses the refraction of light through kinetic controlled lenses. The work transforms the former church into a mesmerising play of light that interplays with the architectural qualities of the Orgelpark.
The work is created in collaboration with Nick Mansveld (technical producer), Cas Aerts (light operator) and Doina Kraal (artistic advisor).
About the artist
Zalán Szakács is an artist who brings together immersive art, scenography and media theory research. Through his work, Szakács explores the relationship between space, body and technology, resulting in multi-sensory experiences that include elements such as light, sound, smell, tactility, and movement. His projects stem from a thorough historical investigation of the locations where he works, which often involve forgotten historical innovations in media and lighting techniques. Szakács exhibited and performed at CTM Festival, Ars Electronica Festival, V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media, and many more.
This work is developed with the support of CBK Rotterdam (Centre for Visual Arts Rotterdam).
