Maria W Horn and Mats Erlandsson present The Spectral Organ (Live)
she/her + he/him
Wed 29 May | Orgelpark
In this special performance, Maria W Horn presents an array of pieces for four handed organ and electronics arranged and played together with her long-time collaborator Mats Erlandsson. They are specially adapted to the organs and architecture of the Orgelpark. Horn’s compositional practice uses minimalist structures and piercing power electronics, utilizing both digital and analog synthesis as well as acoustic instruments and audiovisual components. In this setting, the music uses electronically-treated organs to create a hybrid instrument. When playing the pieces, the two performers measure the duration of each chord by the length of their individual breaths, connecting the body to the organ through the medium of air.
About the artists
Maria W Horn is a composer hailing from the north of Sweden, based in Stockholm since 2011. She is interested in the manipulation of time and space through sonic extremes. Her work examines aspects of human perception – how audiovisuality and overload/loss of perceptual stimuli can conspire to transcend everyday life and invoke alternate mental states. She is a part of Sthlm Drone Society – an association working to promote slow and gradually evolving timbral music, and co-operates the label XKatedral.
Mats Erlandsson is part of the vibrantly re-emerging field of drone music in Stockholm, Sweden, and is associated with practices characterized by the extensive use of sustained sound. In addition to his own artistic practice, Erlandsson holds a position as studio assistant at the world-renowned Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm. Recent releases include Gyttjans Topografi (2023) and Celestial Shores (2023)
These artists are playing at the opening concert Organ/Body on Wednesday May 29.
