Diane Mahín (Talk)

Fri May 31 | de Brakke Grond

During the daytime context programme artist Diane Mahín will take you through the process and her research behind her embodied performances. In doing so, she will focus primarily on the creation of GUT – a durational performance, which imagines how humans behave when their bodies are turned inside out. In GUT, spectators come face to face with a man whose intestinal sounds are amplified, making the internal body visible. She’s blurring the thin boundary between life and death, conscious reasoning and the subconscious gut, resulting in a visceral and absurd experience.

Diane’s talk will focus on the artistic process of GUT, specifically regarding the performativity of the performer and its construction through performer-director feedback loops.

This talk will take place Friday morning in a roundtable setting, after which visitors can engage directly with the creators.

About the speaker

Dutch-Iranian performance maker and sociologist Diane Mahín, searches for a confrontation with the materiality and socialisation of the human body by creating performative worlds. Through sound and physicality, she scrutinises the materiality of the human body in order to dissect absurd social constructions. Dissociation, emptiness, and death are recurring themes in her work. Diane is currently exploring operatic principles within her practice at Sandberg Institute. Alongside her individual practice, she makes performances with her brother Manuel Groothuysen under the name of FADAT.
